Meet The Artist: Nejal Mehta

Nejal Mehta is a painter from India, currently living in Barcelona. After graduating in Economics from India in 2013, she turned towards painting full time. She moved to Los Angeles to study classical drawing and painting, and continued to further her studies of Figurative Art in Barcelona.

Nejal’s work revolves around figurative painting. Her practices involve extensive drawing and painting from life and her mediums include oils, charcoal, gouache and acrylics.

“I enjoy painting people. I am curious to see how people interact and behave outside their space and within their more intimate spaces. To do this, I started painting self portraits from life to get more comfortable painting people from life. This exercise taught me a lot in terms of observation." - (Nejal Mehta to TDC)

“After studying various people from life, I started the large portraits I am currently working on. Here the paintings are a result of the interaction between the sitter and myself and an inquiry into how the process of painting itself is affected during these interactions over a period of time.

‘Robin & Larsen’ is one of the first finished double portraits from this project.” - (Nejal Mehta to TDC)

Her inspirations are painters like Alice Neel, Richard Diebenkorn and Pierre Bonnard to name a few. One of her more current contemporary favourites is Vanessa Garwood.
